At AIKA, we combine 3 powerful approaches to help you diagnose, reverse and manage gut health issues more holistically and naturally. We focus on promoting balance between lifestyle and diet which is based on the principles of Functional medicine, Ayurveda and Gastroenterology. We provide personalized treatment with diet and lifestyle interventions appropriate to one’s individual constitution.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine focuses on the patient instead of the disease. It is a personalized method of optimizing your health based on your individual symptoms, test results, lifestyle and more.

Let’s take the case of IBS. If an individual comes to see us for nutrition counseling for their Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and their symptoms include bloating, indigestion, and occasional diarrhea. In a conventional nutrition setting, the patient may receive a generic low-FODMAP meal plan, which is a standardized diet that eliminates foods that may worsen symptoms in IBS patients. However, the foods may not be the direct cause of her IBS, and not all IBS patients have the same reactions to all foods.

Now, let’s see the treatment from a functional nutrition perspective. We evaluate your lab results, underlying vitamin or mineral deficiencies, food reactions and lifestyle. From there, we develop a personalized nutrition diet to reduce inflammation, heal the gut, and (of course) reduce your symptoms! The dietitian may recommend certain anti-inflammatory foods, gut-healing compounds like glutamine or probiotics, or targeted supplements to replete any nutrient deficiencies found on her lab testing.

 Functional Medicine leverages precise nutrition.

A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and minimally processed food is always a great start. However, some individuals require more targeted interventions with specific foods in order to treat the underlying cause of their health issues.

We go a step further - to understand your emotional health, sleeping habits, and overall lifestyle. Not only do these factors play a huge role in your overall health, but they also have a bidirectional effect on your nutrition. For example, chronic stress can worsen IBS symptoms. Additionally, your sleep habits and stress levels all affect how nutrition is digested and absorbed in the body.  A functional medicine nutritionist can help you establish a stress management routine to further reduce your symptoms. We may also recommend various foods or nutritional supplements to help your body manage your stress and energy levels.

With functional nutrition, we embrace your uniqueness and use it to tailor your individualized nutrition recommendations. In our treatment programs, we use personalized lab testing, functional food as medicine, and lifestyle interventions to start your healing process.

Ayurveda

Incorporating powerful and time-tested principles of Ayurveda into our treatment programs allows a high level of personalisation to treat you keeping in mind your unique body type and symptoms.

The Sanskrit term Ayurveda translates to “knowledge of life,” and the principles of this ancient wisdom remind us that the entire web of life is intricately interwoven. With a unique emphasis on total wellness, the art and science of Ayurveda work to harmonize our internal and external worlds.

Our five senses serve as the portals between the internal and external realms, as the five great elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth dance the dance of creation around and within us. Ayurveda groups these five elements into three basic types of energy and functional principles that are present in everybody and everything. Since there are no comparable words in English to describe these principles; we use the Sanskrit words Vata, Pitta, and Kapha to describe their combinations - which reflect our individual “prakriti”.

Treatment in Ayurveda is a healing process which aims at getting rid of the disease, preventing its future occurrence and ensuring an individual’s overall well-being. Our treatments address the root cause of the problem as the objective is not just restoring health but also to create balance in the body. It is achieved by identifying the nature or “prakriti” of the individual, balancing the doshas which in turn eliminates toxins and strengthens the digestive system thereby opening up channels and rejuvenating the body.

Just as everyone has a unique fingerprint, each person has a particular pattern of energy—an individual combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics—which comprises their own constitution

Ayurveda teaches that a person’s mental, emotional and spiritual being are all interconnected and any kind of imbalance between them results in health disorder and diseases.

Our treatments combine a precisely balanced diet, a healthy lifestyle and supplements which are mainly derived from plants, herbs and minerals.

Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles that are present in everyone and everything. Since there are no single words in English that convey these concepts, we use the original Sanskrit words vata, pitta and kapha. These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body. Energy is required to create movement so that fluids and nutrients get to the cells, enabling the body to function. Energy is also required to metabolize the nutrients in the cells, and is called for to lubricate and maintain the structure of the cell.

Ayurveda suggests that health problems are caused by imbalanced doshas, or life energies and hence aims to balance these doshas through alternative treatments, diet, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes.
